Our need for trained substitute teachers is at an all-time high. To substitute at the Richland School District, candidates must be approved by the District and meet the following qualification requirements:
Teaching Substitute Pay and Benefits
RSD Teacher Substitutes are compensated:
- $155/day for short-term subbing
- $225/day for long-term subbing (3+ weeks)
Teacher substitutes can select their building and classroom preferences, and can work as little as 2 hours at a time (prorated pay)!
Short-Term Teaching Substitute Qualifications
- An Associate’s Degree or higher OR be enrolled in and have achieved at least a Junior status in a state-approved educator program (Bachelor’s level)
- Complete a DPI-approved substitute training program (one-day in-person or self-paced online course estimated to take 6-8 hours)
- Complete the DPI substitute licensure application
- Meet background check requirements

Becoming a Short-Term Teacher Substitute (costs now covered by RSD!)
Currently, the Richland School District will cover the licensure expenses of any new teacher substitutes who commit to a minimum of 25 days (or the part-time equivalent) during a school year. These include:
- A DPI-Approved Substitute Teacher course, 1 day in-person or Online ($100)
- A DPI Substitute license application fee ($125, reimbursed)
- A transcript transfer fee (up to $30, reimbursed)
- A fingerprint background check, if necessary (up to $40, reimbursed)
Candidates will be responsible for travel to/from the training (unless completing it online).
Becoming a Long-Term Substitute
Long-term teacher substitutes require a teaching license. For more information, please reach out to our HR Director (listed at the bottom of this page).
