RICHLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT - JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Aide – Special Education
Job Classification: Aides/Clerical/Food Service Union – Level III
Department: Special Education
Reports To: Building Principal
SUMMARY: The Special Education Aide works under the supervision of the teacher and assists in the daily training program for special education students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality about students and student behaviors.
- Assist student(s) in such physical tasks as putting on and taking off outerwear, moving from room to room, and using the lavatory.
- Listen to student(s) in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, guiding and helping them, but not teaching them.
- Perform simple errands and tasks for student(s) such as sharpening pencils and carrying lunch trays.
- Under the supervision of the special education teacher, work with small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
- Accompany student(s) when trips to the office or school nurse are necessary.
- Establish a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the student(s) without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement.
- Serve as a resource person, if and when requested, to the student(s) personnel evaluation team.
- Prepare instructional aids, copy worksheets, and prepare bulletin boards as requested by the teacher.
- Record student(s) performance data as requested by the teacher.
- Assist students with PT/OT exercises as directed by the Physical Therapist and/or Occupational Therapist.
- Be aware of and understand the medical needs of the student(s).
- Assist with behavior management programs and techniques.
- Feed or help the student(s) feed themselves.
- Assist student(s) with toilet needs.
- Assist with loading and unloading of student(s) on buses.
- Assist with sanitation of room and equipment.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervise student(s) when the teacher is not present.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma and previous experience working with handicapped children are required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Certification as a Special Education Aide by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Be able to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Be able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, parents, students, and administrators.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Be able to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY: Be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Be able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Be able to work with severely handicapped children. The ability to tell where sound is coming from is essential in this job. Be able to meet multiple demands from several people. Be able to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Be able to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies.
TERMS of EMPLOYMENT: Level III, term position. Wage and fringe benefits will be determined annually by the Board of Education in accordance with the negotiated agreement.
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually in writing by the Building Administrator. A copy of the evaluation will be given to the employee and a conference held with them to discuss the evaluation.
