School nurses play a crucial role in empowering students to be well by teaching, treating, counseling, and supporting them to maximize classroom time and minimize health office visits and absences. In addition to fostering students' health management skills, school nurses monitor immunization status, conduct vision and hearing screenings, and coordinate dental care. They also refer students for necessary treatments and provide information on community resources. As integral members of the educational team, they participate in 504/IEP meetings, develop individualized healthcare plans, assist with medication management, support students with chronic conditions or special healthcare needs, and perform communicable disease surveillance.
