Multi-Lingual Learner (ML)
Multi-Lingual Learners
Immigrant and multilingual students and families bring rich cultural and linguistic resources to our schools. Our goal is to affirm and strengthen students’ cultural identities while supporting them in reaching higher levels of language proficiency and confidence in their classes.

Program Model
Multi-lingual learner (ML) services support the development of students’ English language skills and ensure access to grade-level academic content for all students. Students qualify for ML services until they reach a high level of English skills, not only in speaking and listening but also in reading and writing.
See our Frequently Asked Questions below:

All families denote the language they speak at home when they enroll their children. If it is not English, ML staff assess the student’s English skills. Based on the results, the student may qualify for ML services.
Students that qualify for ML services take an annual assessment of their English skills. They continue to qualify for ML services until they reach a high level of English proficiency. The length of time to gain proficiency is unique to each child.
No, ML students are in general education classrooms where they receive support for English language development by meeting one-on-one or in small groups with our ML teachers. In some cases, especially in grades 7-12, students go to special ML classes for the duration of a period (one-on-one or in a small group).
