Gifted and Talented at RSD
Purpose
- To identify which students need advancement in their courses or grade level.
- To provide enrichment with pull-out engagement 1-2 days a week during “What I Need Times” or study hall, as well as off-site opportunities (via CESA 3 and CESA 4).
- To provide academic team opportunities for students.
- To provide support to staff by offering ideas to add more rigor to classroom curriculums.
Identification of Gifted and Talented
- Teachers are excellent judges of ability and observe children for signs of being high-ability learners using the TOPS (Teacher Observation of Potential in Students) system questionnaire.
- Parents can discuss their child’s academic abilities with their child’s teacher and be referred to discuss the services offered by the District with the Gifted and Talented Coordinator.
- The child can advocate for themselves with their teacher, school counselor, or building principal.
Evaluations
- All students in grades K-6 take the iReady exam three times during the school year to assess reading and math abilities.
- The Wisconsin State Forward Exam is taken in the spring by all students in grades 3-8 (results in September).
- If needed, the school psychologist can administer IQ testing (Weschsler Intelligence Scale for Children 5th Edition -WISC-V).
- Individual subject testing – most teachers have a pretest to evaluate if a child already knows the subject material and can be offered alternative curriculum, enrichment, or subject grade advancement.
- See our Curriculum and Instruction page for more information on testing and evaluations.
