HONORS, AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS

The Richland School District is very proud of several honors, awards and recognitions it has received.  Some of them have money associated whereas others do not.  In either case, we want to toot our own horn!

Jefferson Elementary School received the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Grant for a second year in a row.  The money is used to purchase a wide variety of fruits and vegetables for snacks.  It is supposed to provide nutritionally sound snacks and encourage students to try some things that they may not ordinarily get at home.  Last year the amount was $13,124 and this year it is $7,939.  Learning by eating – what a great concept.

Jefferson also is being recognized as a “Wisconsin School of Recognition” for attaining above average test scores in the 2009-10 Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam.  There will be a ceremony in Madison on October 18th to receive a plaque.  Also, the school will receive $2,000 and the ability to compete for a $250,000 grant.  Keep up the terrific work, and good luck in competing for the grant.

The Richland Middle School is receiving the “Exemplary Middle School Award” from the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators.  The award is being given for high growth in math.  It allows the middle school to compete for the Middle School of Excellence Award.  Successful winners will be notified by January 15, 2011.  Congratulations to the middle school and good luck for the next level of awards.

Bill McCorkle, board member, received his Level I Achievement from the Wisconsin Association of school Boards (WASB) at the Region 9 meeting held on September 30th at Fennimore.  There are five levels based upon the points each board member earns by attending different WASB conferences and workshops.  He truly is a life-long learner.

The District has been selected to present a session at the Milwaukee School Board’s Joint Convention in January 2011.  The Successful Schools process of self-evaluation will be the topic, and the district presenters will be Rachel Schultz, Heather Fitzloff and Kathy Fry, along with several people from CESA #3.  The District used the process to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses.  The process involved many people, including an evening of facilitators talking with community people.  A power point can be found on the district website.

Finally, the District was awarded a $437,000 interest-free loan to improve facilities.  Part of the process included a local match of 10%.  In one year, the district received $46,391 in donations of cash and volunteer time.  Now we can complete the paperwork for the money, and begin doing the projects.  Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen by giving your time, talents and money.
