A Little Good News!

Day-to-day activities continue in the Richland School District in spite of the turmoil caused by activities in the state capitol.  Here are some wonderful events that help remind us why we have public education.

·         The RCHS choir just completed its ninth trip to Washington DC.  The first trip took place in 1987, and Pam Kintz has been taking a group once every three years since then, giving all choir students an opportunity to go once during their high school years.  This year 75 students spent 3 full days in DC touring national monuments and museums and singing at several sites around the nation’s capitol.

·         Cole, a fifth grader in Mrs. Jane Hirsbrunner’s class at Doudna Elementary School, competed recently in the state spelling bee, winning several contests on his way to the state competition.  The annual spelling bee is open to students in 5th through 8th grade.  We look forward to the possibility of seeing Cole compete again!

·         The middle school and the high school started spring sports this month.  The high school offers golf, track, girls soccer, girls softball and boys baseball.  The middle school offers track.  Between the two schools over 150 students are involved in the sporting activities.  They are all hoping for warmer weather.

·         Teachers at all levels received training in the use of Smart boards; a kind of computer-operated white board that can be interactive for both teacher and students.  Several staff members became proficient at using the boards, and now are trainers themselves.  Actually, they have done some training for teachers at St. Mary’s School.

·         The District qualified for a low cost loan program called “Qualified Zone Academy Bond” or QZAB.  The loan is for $437,000 and may be used for maintenance and repair projects on district properties.   Work on the projects will begin this summer.
